(DALLAS) April 16, 2019 – Elizabeth Lang Miers, a Justice on the Court of Appeals for the 5th District of Texas at Dallas until December 2018, has rejoined Locke Lord as a Partner in the Firm’s Appellate Practice Group and Director of Attorney Development based in the Dallas office. Prior to being appointed Justice in 2003, she spent 27 years with Locke Lord predecessor firms Locke Liddell & Sapp, Locke Purnell Rain Harrell and Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely.
“At Locke Lord, we’re committed to developing our Associates and Senior Counsels and mentoring them to Partnership and otherwise successful legal careers. Liz’s strong background and distinct perspective surrounding attorney development will be integral to our continued success in this area,” said Locke Lord Chair David Taylor. “Liz is also a highly experienced trial lawyer and appellate Justice whose prominent profile in the national appellate community will help strengthen our Appellate Practice Group in Dallas and across the Firm.”
Serving in leadership positions across numerous community and professional organizations, Lang Miers is Chair-Elect of the Judicial Division of the American Bar Association (ABA) and Past Chair of the ABA’s Appellate Judges Conference. She is an Advisory Board member of the Dallas Women Lawyers Association and a member of the International Women’s Forum. She is a Past President of the Dallas Bar Association (DBA) and a member of the DBA’s Pro Se Litigant Committee. Lang Miers is a Past President of the Mac Taylor Inn of Court, and she served as Chair of the five-member State of Texas Multi-District Litigation Panel. She is a Life Fellow of the American, Texas and Dallas Bar Foundations; a member of the American Law Institute; a member of the Board of Trustees of the Center for American and International Law; and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society.
“Successful law firms do a great job at talent management — and that includes recruiting and retaining strong performers and training young lawyers. To be able to return to Locke Lord and focus on this crucially important piece of the Firm’s already exceptional culture is a wonderful opportunity for me,” said Lang Miers.
For 15 years, Lang Miers served as a Justice on the busiest appeals court in Texas, authoring more than 1,800 opinions on civil and criminal appeals from trial courts in Dallas, Collin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. She began her legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable James A. Finch, Jr. of the Supreme Court of Missouri.
Among her many recognitions and awards, Lang Miers received the Judge Samuel Pessarra Outstanding Jurist Award, chosen from all state and federal judges in Texas, from the Texas Bar Foundation; the Judge Sam Williams Leadership Award from the State Bar of Texas; the Louise Raggio Award from the Dallas Women Lawyers Association; and the Chair’s Award for Excellence from the Texas Center for the Judiciary.
