Locke Lord Houston Attorneys Part of Team That Secured Ruling in Favor of Academy as Texas Supreme Court Grants Petition to Dismiss Lawsuits Tied to Sutherland Springs Mass Shooting

Locke Lord Partners Janet E. Militello and Chris Dove (both of Houston) were part of a team of lawyers that secured a ruling in favor of Academy, Ltd., as the Supreme Court of Texas granted its petition to overturn lower court decisions that allowed lawsuits brought by victims and families of a 2017 mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, to proceed. The Texas Supreme Court ruling held that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, passed by Congress in 2005, gives Academy immunity from and requires dismissal of the lawsuits, which alleged negligence in its sale of a rifle and magazines to the gunman.
