Locke Lord's philosophy, as reflected in our Mission Statement, is to become "better, stronger and more highly regarded" each year. We will not rest on our laurels and we are not content with the status quo. We are committed to strategic growth that provides what our clients and prospective clients need in an ever-changing global legal environment.
Momentum and Strategic Growth
To help us accomplish these goals, we focus on hiring high-caliber lateral lawyers who can mesh their strengths with ours and become team players in a unique entrepreneurial environment that promotes cross-selling and collaboration.
Our forward-thinking and opportunity-based growth plan includes expanding our national and international footprint and our strength in complex litigation, intellectual property, transactional, and regulatory work. Locke Lord currently has offices in 19 U.S. cities, and in London, Istanbul, Hong Kong and Tokyo. We are constantly assessing further strategic growth, particularly in certain targeted practice areas and the international arena.
Our many strong practice areas include appellate, aviation, bankruptcy/restructuring/insolvency, business litigation and dispute resolution, class action litigation, consumer finance, corporate and finance transactions, employee benefits, energy, environmental, financial services, fund formation, health care and life sciences, insurance and reinsurance, intellectual property, international, labor and employment, mergers and acquisitions, privacy and cyber security, private equity, public finance, public law, real estate, regulatory, REIT, tax, technology, telecommunications, venture capital, and white collar criminal defense and internal investigations.
A Culture of Cross-Selling and Collaboration
We hire quality lateral lawyers when their strengths enhance our strengths and vice versa. This hiring strategy has brought us well-known and well-respected former SEC commissioners, former U.S. Attorneys, and other experienced lawyers and practice leaders.
We work together at Locke Lord, and our impressive record of cross-selling successes shows that we are a well-integrated team of colleagues who communicate effectively and effortlessly across practice areas and offices for the good of our clients.
Integration as a Way of Life
Locke Lord's culture embraces lateral hires immediately, providing for them the same training opportunities and high-level marketing services offered to Locke Lord's existing 650-plus lawyers. We assist with Transitional Business Plans, coordinate integration meetings, and help identify cross-selling initiatives. Our Marketing and Business Development team helps with competitive intelligence research, custom pitch materials and RFP responses, media opportunities, client articles and announcements, and more. Our proactive Practice Development Committee – comprised of Partners from around the Firm with strong support from Firm management – promotes a host of initiatives designed to increase cross-selling and lawyer interaction across our various practices and offices. Finally, we work with our Practice Group leaders to draw on the experience of other specialty areas and increase our laterals' value to clients.
Perspectives from Valued Firm Leaders who Joined as Laterals
Lou Cohen, National Chair of the Finance, Banking and Real Estate Department, joined Locke Lord in November 2010: "Locke Lord's commitment to cross-selling and collaboration is something I've not seen anywhere else in my career. I came aboard with a group of colleagues from an even larger firm, and Locke Lord's support and resources allowed us to hit the ground running. We haven't stopped since. Locke Lord has an inviting, collegial culture that is good for business and good for morale."
Roel Campos, National Chair of Securities Regulation and Enforcement, joined Locke Lord in April 2011: "I have been especially impressed with the welcome and the opportunities that have come my way since joining Locke Lord. The Firm's management is forward-thinking and proactive in assessing how we need to work in a changing world, and we are gearing up for exciting opportunities ahead. I constantly hear from lawyers in our other offices who want to integrate me on their teams and in their client pitches, and who want to use my experience as a Commissioner with the SEC to meet with general counsels around the country. I'm pleased to be a part of taking Locke Lord to the next level."
