Smitha B. Uthaman, Ph.D.


Smitha B. Uthaman, Ph.D., is an associate in the Chicago office of Locke Lord LLP. She focuses her practice on patent litigation with an emphasis on various fields in the life sciences, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, agriculture, immunology, stem cell research and genome engineering.

Dr. Uthaman has worked on aspects of patent prosecution, due diligence, freedom to operate, validity and counselling as a scientific advisor and patent agent since 2008. She received her Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology, with a research focus on neuroscience, and conducted post-doctoral research on lysosomal storage diseases. Prior to attending graduate school, she was a junior field engineer working on oilfield exploration and characterization with the wireline segment of Schlumberger Ltd.
