Doug Sargent is a Partner in Locke Lord's Chicago and West Palm Beach offices. Doug's practice focuses primarily on representing clients in consumer finance and Telephone Consumer Protection Act litigation in federal and state courts across the country and advising clients in the cannabis industry. Doug also has substantial experience in complex commercial litigation and arbitrations in jurisdictions across the country.
Consumer Finance Litigation and Compliance
Doug regularly represents mortgage lenders, servicers, trusts, and other financial institutions in individual and class action lawsuits. These lawsuits often involve claims under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), as well as state law claims for fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty. As he is well-versed with these statutes and regulations, Doug has the legal acumen to handle issues that arise with lending products.
Cannabis, Marijuana, CBD, and Hemp
Doug advises clients on legal and regulatory issues associated with operating within the cannabis industry, including procuring state-level licenses in various jurisdictions and developing and bolstering company policies and procedures. Doug is a co-editor of the Firm’s cannabis law blog and frequently writes about the ever-evolving legal and regulatory landscape for cannabis and its effect on cannabis-related businesses.
TCPA Litigation and Compliance
Doug has significant experience representing clients in responding to class action and individual lawsuits asserting claims under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). He has obtained favorable results for clients in these high-exposure cases, including orders of dismissal. Doug also consults with clients to develop and strengthen their TCPA compliance programs.
Commercial Litigation and Arbitrations
Doug handles complex litigation matters involving breach of commercial contracts, fraudulent business practices, and piercing the corporate veil and alter-ego liability in federal and state courts, as well as in arbitration proceedings.
