Ricardo Lopez (Los Angeles) served as pro bono counsel to an unaccompanied minor who was recently granted asylum in the United States due to dangers she faced in her home country of Guatemala. Lopez accepted the case in early 2017 with the help of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), an organization that protects unaccompanied children who enter the U.S. immigration system alone. Nearly eighteen months later, on April 12, 2019, his client was granted asylum. As an asylee, she has the immediate legal right to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation and is authorized to apply for lawful permanent resident status and sponsor her child to join her. His client is currently attending high school and hopes to one day become a nurse practitioner.
