According to interviews conducted by the Chicago Sun-Times, Democratic lawmakers expect to introduce their full 300-page bill to legalize marijuana for adult use in Illinois in the coming days. Rep. Kelly Cassidy advised that she and Sen. Heather Steans, both Chicago Democrats, attempted to draft legislation “that centers equity and inclusion in the industry, that centers restoration of records and social justice components and restoration of communities.” Those efforts will be imperative to gain support from the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, which will look to use legalization as a vehicle to address racial and social concerns, including expunging misdemeanor pot convictions, allowing people with pot convictions to work in the industry, and setting diversity hiring goals.
We will have a full breakdown of the legalization bill after it’s introduced.
