Brexit secretary says that Jean-Claude Juncker is trying to get him sacked
May 12, 2017

David Davis, the Brexit Secretary, has claimed that Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, is trying to get him removed from his senior position in the cabinet. Writing in The Telegraph, Mr. Davis said “All these stories are briefing against me, trying to get me sacked — which, of course, is a compliment by the way. If they don’t want me across the table, there is a reason for that – it is in Britain’s interests, not theirs.” Referring to the news earlier this week that that Mr. Junker had leaked his dispute with the Prime Minister to a German newspaper, Mr. Davis added – “I think to be honest he has now learnt his lesson – he is not going to be meddling in British politics any more or at least if he does he will get the same reaction.” Mr. Davis said an election victory for Theresa May would “reinforce her negotiating hand” and added: “One of the things that may have led to that briefing is the fact they know a big mandate from the British people is a big mandate in the negotiation and helps [us] and doesn’t help him.” The Brexit Secretary said he was confident that an early agreement would be reached on the rights of EU citizens in the UK and British expatriates on the continent, which is set to be one of the first items on the agenda once negotiations start.
