Snap election approved by MPSs 522 to 13
April 19, 2017

The House of Commons has today voted 522 to 13 in favour of calling the snap general election, above the two-thirds majority that is required, as Labour and the Liberal Democrats supported the decision.

Theresa May argued that a fresh mandate would strengthen her hand in Brexit negotiations and provide certainty for the future.

The general election will now go ahead on 8 June 2017.
