Resigning EU Ambassador’s scathing attack on UK Government’s “muddled thinking” on Brexit
January 4, 2017

Following his shock resignation yesterday as Britain’s Ambassador to the EU, Sir Ivan Rogers’ scathing email to Brussel’s staff has been leaked accusing the UK’s top politicians of “ill-founded arguments and muddled thinking” over Brexit.

Sir Ivan’s departing email reads: “I hope you will continue to challenge ill-founded arguments and muddled thinking and that you will never be afraid to speak the truth to those in power. I hope that you will support each other in those difficult moments where you have to deliver messages that are disagreeable to those who need to hear them. I hope that you will continue to be interested in the views of others, even where you disagree with them, and in understanding why others act and think in the way that they do.”

Sir Ivan has been a top diplomat for more than 20 years and served the last four Prime Ministers.

Brexit supporters, however, have dismissed his email as sour grapes coming from an opponent to leaving the EU, saying his departure will pave the way for a pro-Brexit replacement.
