Theresa May – ‘The UK will be the true global champion of free trade’
November 14, 2016

The Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver her first foreign policy speech at the upcoming Lord Mayor’s banquet in the City of London today, announcing plans that the United Kingdom will develop a new approach to global trade following the country’s decision to leave the European Union. Referencing Donald Trump’s victory last week, the Prime Minister is expected to express a wish to give something back to hard-hit communities and create a fairer, more balanced approach to globalisation – “to be the true global champion of free trade in this new modern world, we also need to do something to help those who have experienced the downsides of globalisation”. As part of this new approach to global trade, the Prime Minister has commented that she would like the UK to trade more with “its old allies” (potentially referring to the commonwealth nations), broaden its scope and look beyond the EU and Europe’s borders.
