Ministers yesterday made a late guarantee that EU students would be eligible to take out subsidised student loans if they apply to study at English universities next year. The news comes just four days before the deadline to apply to Oxford and Cambridge universities. Despite this welcome news for university vice-chancellors, universities are still prepared for a significant fall in the number of students from the EU due to the uncertainties raised by Brexit. 23,640 students from the EU accepted places at British universities this year, a rise of 7% on last year.
