Chicago Partner Irina Dashevsky, Co-Chair of the Firm’s Cannabis Industry Group, was quoted by Crain’s Chicago Business on a combination of factors preventing newcomers to the Illinois cannabis industry. While existing cannabis operators were grandfathered into the licensing process, COVID-19 and ongoing litigation have delayed the release of new licenses for retailers to sell recreational marijuana.
"It's unlikely any new operators are going to open in 2021," Dashevsky said. "Incumbents were going to get a six-month lead, and now it's turning into years."
