    Equality Illinois Names Edwards Wildman a Leading Law Firm for LGBT Workplace Equality

    Edwards Wildman is pleased to announce that the firm has been recognized as one of the top Illinois law firms in fostering workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) lawyers and support staff by Equality Illinois for the second year in a row. The ranking is based on results from the Equality Illinois 2013 Law Firm Survey, which gathers information about the firm's policies on LGBT inclusiveness and equality. Equality Illinois is dedicated to securing, protecting and defending equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Illinois.

    Edwards Wildman has long supported equality in the workplace and continues to increase the diversity of its workforce by hiring, developing, retaining and advancing the best lawyers and staff from a wide range of backgrounds. The firm's LGBT Affinity Group is led by Matt McTygue, partner-in-charge of the firm's Boston office. For many years, Edwards Wildman lawyers have played an important role in LGBT civil rights, equality and justice Our lawyers submitted a key amicus brief to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in the 2003 case Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, in which Massachusetts became the first state to recognize a state constitutional right to marriage for gays and lesbians, and representing city and town clerks who challenged the governor’s efforts to preclude the marriage in Massachusetts of gay and lesbian couples from other states. More recently, our firm submitted an amicus brief in the Defense of Marriage Act challenge in the First Circuit and participated in an employer amicus brief filed on behalf of 278 businesses, cities, and other employers and employer organizations in United States v. Windsor, the recent United States Supreme Court case that held Section 3 of DOMA to be unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment.

    In addition to the recognition from Equality Illinois, Edwards Wildman has a rating of 100% in the Human Rights Campaign's annual Corporate Equality Index.
