February 26, 2013 – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has appointed Locke Lord Chicago Attorney Sherina E. Maye as a Commissioner of the Illinois Commerce Commission, an organization that serves as the watchdog for Illinois consumers. Maye, an associate with Locke Lord in the Business Litigation & Dispute practice group, will help lead the ICC in its mission to set rates and charges for public utilities, including electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water and sewer rates. As a Commissioner, she also will help lead the state organization in its regulation of transportation issues such as railroad safety, towing, trucking and the moving of household goods.
Maye is the youngest commissioner ever appointed to the ICC, but Governor Quinn's office said her strong background and significant experience in consumer finance litigation are key ingredients that led to her appointment.
"While we will miss Sherina and the strength and enthusiasm she brings to our business and consumer finance litigation team, we see this as an incredible opportunity for one of our finest young lawyers," said Locke Lord Chicago Office Managing Partner Jennifer Kenedy.
"I'm humbled and honored by this appointment and believe public service is a commitment those of us who have chosen the legal profession are called to make," said Maye. "I embrace this opportunity and look forward to carrying out the ICC's mission."
Maye graduated from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. She is a mentor at the Young Women's Leadership Charter School, a member of the National Executive Board of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a Founding Board Member of the Great Lakes Academy Charter School, and she serves as a member of the Associates Committee for the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law Firms and as an Associate Board Member for the Chicago Committee for Minorities in Large Law Firms.
