Mark Siegel has 25 years of experience on the highest level serving and providing strategic counsel to a broad range of domestic private and public sector clients. Mr. Siegel joined Locke Lord after three years as the Senior Vice President for Government and Public Affairs at New Century Financial Corporation, and served as head of one of the premier international representation practices.
A lifelong friend of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Siegel has three times represented Pakistani governments in Washington, D.C. He was Ms. Bhutto’s speechwriter for two decades, and collaborated with her on the international bestselling book “Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy and the West” which was published shortly after her assassination. In 2008, Siegel was the guest on Jon Stewart’s Comedy Central discussing his book with Ms. Bhutto. With Duane Baughman, he was recently selected as a Peabody Award winner for their documentary BHUTTO which had premiered at the Sundance Film Institute.
Mr. Siegel has taught at the American University and at the George Washington University where he headed the University’s Semester In Washington Program. He currently lectures in Speech Writing and Speech Presentation at Columbia University. Siegel has written extensively for major newspapers in the United States and around the world, and frequently appears on television as a political analyst. He served as the Today Show’s on-air expert on the Electoral College during the presidential recount in 2000, and for three national conventions served as political consultant to Walter Cronkite. He wrote the first doctoral dissertation on the relationship of Party rules to structure and function.
After serving as Assistant Professor of Political Science at Loyola University, Mr. Siegel became Legislative Assistant for Domestic Affairs for Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D-MN). He then served as Executive Director of the Democratic National Committee under Chairman Robert S. Strauss, and Deputy Assistant to the President in the Carter White House. He was the National Coordinator of the Draft Kennedy movement in 1979-1980. Serving on three party reform commissions of the national Democratic Party, Mr. Siegel was the principal drafter of the delegate selection rules under which Democratic Presidential candidates are nominated. He was an elected at-large member of the Democratic National Committee for ten years, and twice was the Director of the Party’s International Visitor Program at Democratic National Conventions. Siegel served on the Board of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs for 15 years where he directed the Institute’s programs in Asia. After heading two prominent lobbying firms for over 25 years, Siegel became Senior Vice President for Governmental Affairs of New Century Financial, and then served for three years as Chief of Staff to Congressman Steve Israel (D-NY), the current chairman of the Democratic National Campaign Committee.
